15,000 arrested during lockdown in Gauteng as cops seize booze, drugs

Johannesburg – Lawbreakers burst at various roadblocks in Gauteng during the lockdown had drugs, liquor, and unlicensed firearms, the provincial police said on Thursday.

Commissioner of police in Gauteng Lt-Gen Elias Mawela confirmed that over 15,000 arrests had been made in Gauteng during lockdown.

The commissioner spoke on the sidelines of an operation to crack down on non-compliance with lockdown regulations in Soweto. He was accompanied by Faith Mazibuku, the MEC of community safety.

Mawela added that police, soldiers, and provincial metro police set up 11 roadblocks on the main routes leading to neighboring provinces.
