20 Killed in Boko Haram attack on Nigerian army base

NIGERIA- Boko Haram attack has killed 20 people and wounded many others in cor-ordinated attacks on the military and villages around the key-point in northern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, which they also tried to infiltrate across a defensive trench, officials said on Monday.

The brazen operation occurred in the area where Boko Haram was born and highlights the authorities struggle to end the extremist group.

The extremist fighters attacked a military base, senior military officer said in the Cashew Plantation area at the entrance to the city with suicide bombers, mortars and guns, leading to a prolonged battle.

The officer said, “Eighteen Boko Haram terrorists on foot attacked the military base while seven suicide bombers targeted residents of nearby Bale Shuwar and Alikaranti villages at 1950 GMT,”

“The terrorists fired mortars at troops,”

Chief security officer at the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Bello Dambatto told AFP that a totally of people dead had risen to 20 after two people succumbed to their wounds in hospital, “We are not sure if the remaining 82 wounded victims will make it. Some of them are in critical condition and will require major surgery from their wounds, which are mostly from gunshots.”

The army’s statement said that one solider died and added that it had killed six insurgents and “neutralised” seven suicide bombers. The attackers attempted to infiltrate into the city, a militia leader fighting Boko Haram said.

UN condemned the the deadly attack and gave their own numbers from local sources that at least 34 civilians killed and 90 wounded.
