287 Medicine & Health Sciences graduates received their qualifications
Cape Town- 287 medical Stellenbosch University students received various degrees in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. This is the largest number of graduates under the faculty in 62 years.
All in all 830 health sciences students received undergraduate, honours and masters degrees.
The graduates includes students under the following fields: dietetics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech-language and hearing therapy.
The faculty’s Ronel Bester said: “Two-hundred-and-seventy-seven students received their medical or MBChB degrees. This group also has the most group of students obtaining cum laude, with 26 graduates passing with distinction.”
A 27-year old man Xolani Hadebe, says even though he was rejected from all the medical schools in the country. He never have to.
“My mother was a domestic worker, she never went to school and there was no way she could afford to send me to varsity. My father passed away when I was very young, so the only way I could make sure that I go to varsity was through a scholarship.”
Hadebe worked in a supermarket so that he can fund his studies. He says sometimes he had to pack groceries for his classmates and to avoid them pitying him he hid from them.
“I knew that I owed it to my mother and I promised her that ‘you know what ma, I will be a doctor.’ The fact that she never went to school, I said ‘I’ll go to school for you and I’ll make you proud’. That was the reason that kept me going throughout.”
