JOHANNESBURG – Three ANC members from the North West province were on Monday arrested for illegal possession of a fire arm.
The ANC in the North West has distanced itself from the incident and has allowed the law to take its course.
Police say the three were among the six men who appeared in court on Monday after they were caught drinking in a Nasrec parking area on Sunday.
“The police noticed the rowdy behaviour of the men and approached their vehicle, only to find out that they were drinking in public and to make matters worse, an unlicensed firearm was found as police searched the car,” police said.
“We as police have been given a mandate to maintain peace and order during the course of the ANC elective conference, we will do our job and ensure that no one disturbs the peace.”
Police also confirmed that the men were detained at Booysens police station and some of them have since been released and one of them will remain in custody until29 December, when he’ll apply for bail.
“Five of the six men who appeared in court were released today (Monday) and the owner of the unlicensed firearm will remain in custody until December 29,” concluded the police.
The ANC heads to its fourth day of the 54th elective conference with new head, Cyril Ramaphosa.
