Ismaila – According to survivors and eyewitnesses, on Friday when imam was in the pulpit and about to deliver his Friday sermon, there are people who arrived in SUVs. They took positions from the windows and doors of the mosque, then they opened fire and threw grenades at the “estimated 500 worshippers”.
When they stopped firing and throwing grenades more than 300 people have been killed including 27 children, and 127 people were injured.
During this attack worshippers screamed and cried and the mosque shook. People tried to go to the bathrooms some people tried to leave using the windows as their exit, but this also resulted in a stampede.
This said to be the country’s deadliest attack by “Islamic extremists in the country’s modern history.”
“We knew that the mosque was under attack by (militants),” said witness Ebid Salem Mansour recalling the intense gunfire during the attack.
“Everyone lay down on the floor and kept their heads down. If you raised your head you get shot,” he said. “The shooting was random and hysterical at the beginning and then became more deliberate. Whoever they weren’t sure was dead or still breathing was shot dead.”
