Agencies- Death toll rises to 53 in Russia shopping mall fire

MOSCOW- Russian News agency said on Monday that at least 53 bodies have been recovered from a fire that swept through a busy shopping centre in an industrial city in Siberia.

Several people are still missing from the blaze that broke out on Sunday in the city of Kemerovo, the agencies quoted emergency services as saying.

Previous reports said that the number was 37 dead, 70 missing, the number included 40 children.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said, according to TASS news agency, “At this time, we can confirm the deaths of 37 people in the fire at the Kemerovo shopping centre”

Russian television footage showed images of thick black smoke coming out the Winter Cherry shopping centre in the city of Kemerovo, the facilities include a sauna, a bowling alley and a multiplex cinema and the mall was packed on Sunday afternoon when the fire happened.

A source in the the local rescue services reported to the RIA Novosti agency that the Investigative Committee said it was “verifying information that 35 people could be missing”.

The Investigative Committee said, “The roof collapsed in two theaters in the cinema.”

Alexandre Eremeyev, an official of local Russian emergency services ministry said in a statement, “This shopping centre on several floors was packed with people mid-day on Sunday. No one knows exactly how many people there were inside when the fire broke out.”
