Al Ahly confirm beating Belgian interest for his services

Al Ahly have confirmed that they had to fend off some tough competition from European clubs in order to get Percy Tau.

Although Tau was not initially expected to leave the club, his desire for regular game time had sounded sirens in the direction of possible club suitors including Al Ahly.

Tau had been linked to the east African club but those links were initially not taken seriously, merely because out of all the options that had previously been flying around as alternatives to Brighton fort eh tricky winger, no one thought he would the prestigious English Premier League in favour of a return to the African continent.

Al Ahly contract director Amr Tawfik has admitted, however, that negotiating with both Tau and Brighton was not a smooth sailing exercise.

“Percy Tau deal was extremely difficult, the negotiations with Brighton for a month and a half, and they were asking for a very high price,” he said. He also admitted that their biggest trump card during these negotiations was a familiar name and face to Tau,” said Tawfik.

“It was also hard to convince the player (Tau) to leave the Premier League, but Mosimane helped a lot with that, and at the end, he chose Al Ahly over other offers from Belgium.”

Tau is set to make his Ahly debut when the new Egyptian League gets underway.
