JOHANNESBURG- Billy Downer is the same state advocate who successfully prosecuted fraudster Schabir Shaik will lead the corruption case against former president Jacob Zuma.
News24 is reporting that Advocate Billy Downer SC, a deputy director of public prosecutions in the Western Cape, will lead the State’s case against Zuma, which is scheduled to start in the Durban High Court on Friday morning.
Downer is a veteran prosecutor who recently successfully convicted former Western Cape top cop Arno Lamoer.
Downer has lead some high profile cases such as investigation into the arms deal in the early 2000s and prosecuted Shaik, Zuma’s former financial adviser, between 2004 and 2006.
Downer also led the prosecution team in 2009 when the NPA decided to drop the corruption charges against Jacob Zuma, when former acting prosecutions boss Mokotedi Mpshe made the decision.
Advocate Moipone Noko, director of public prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal, will continue to oversee the case, but Downer will lead the State in court.
Referring to who the judge will be to preside over the matter, spokesperson Nathi Mncube told News24,
“Unfortunately we can’t disclose that until the date of the hearing.”
