JOHANNESBURG- Customers and employees have been evacuated from the East Rand Mall on Friday afternoon following a shooting.

It is reported that a group of armed men entered the mall and tried to rob a jewellery store.

The exact details of the shooting have not been made clear but EWN is reporting that eyewitnesses say several people have been wounded.

Eyewitness News is reporting that they arrived at scene where many customers and employees were standing outside.

A Wimpy employee told EWN,  “We heard a gunshot close to Spur. We thought it was from the banking hall; people were all over and it was chaotic.”

Some media reports are reporting one guard had been shot and and killed.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Tebogo Magoro said, “One of the victims had a gun shot wound to the back and unfortunately sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on scene. One of the alleged robbers and a female victim sustained minor moderate injuries and were treated on scene before one was airlifted by netcare 911 and the other transport by road to nearest hospital,”

The employee said other employees were told to go home for the day as it’s still not safe to go inside.

“Some people were hiding. Even our manager was screaming at us to go down because I wanted to watch.”

Police authorities arrived at the scene with paramedics, some of the police vehicles blocked the entrance to prevent people from entering.
