Audit: Employers still not compliant with regulations for domestic workers

Johannesburg –  An audit by the Mpumalanga Labour Department has found that half of employers don’t comply with the minimum wage for domestic workers.

The two-month investigation revealed non-compliance with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and the national minimum wage act.

Occupational Health Safety specialist with the Mpumalanga Department of Labour, Nhlanhla Mbuyazi said: “the numbers are still low. Employees especially domestic workers we have just increased the minimum wage for an hour. Our minimum wage from just R21 to R23.”

“Employers are still paying way less than R21 of the hourly rate. We have issued enforcement notices to those employers that are still not implementing the minimum wage. In some areas domestic workers are still earning from R1,500 to R2,500 which is below the minimum wage.”
