Authorities rule out stampede as cause of tavern tragedy

East London – The deaths of 21 teens at a tavern in East London are not the result of a stampede.

That’s the word from the Eastern Cape Community Safety MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe.

She says post-mortem results will be released in due time. The teens were found dead from unknown causes early Sunday morning.

The Eastern Cape Liquor Board has shut down the Enyobeni Tavern.

The board’s chief inspector Zola Tyikwe said once investigations by the police have been completed, it will lay criminal charges against the owner.
