LOS ANGELES – Former US President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, have struck a deal to produce films and series for Netflix Inc, the streaming service said on Monday, giving the former first couple a powerful and unprecedented platform to shape their post-White House legacy.
Netflix said in a statement the name of the production company, Higher Ground Productions which will be under the Obama’s have the option to have scripted, unscripted series, documentaries and feature films.
A person a familiar with the deal said the Obama’s who will be very hands on in producing content and the pair will appear personally in some of the shows, while curating others.
Actually terms of the multi-year contract were not released and the source said the the first programming of the show will only appear in May 2019.
This agreement with Netflix which has 125 million subscribers worldwide is the first of it kind for a person who was in the White House.
Barack Obama said in a statement, “We hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples and help them share their stories with the entire world.”
Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said the Obama’s are “uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better.”
