JOHANNESBURG – The life of the late South African songstress, Brenda Fassie will be brought back to life in a new biopic film to be shot in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
The film, to be titled Brenda: The True Story, chronicles the life of Brenda Fassie from the time she was young and how she managed to rise against all odds to become one of the country’s most iconic entertainers.
The life of the iconic pop star will be brought back to life by a London-based film and television production company Showbizbee, and the cast for the biopic will be entirely South African.
In a statement, Showbizbee announced that the film was written and will be directed by British director and producer Edward W Shaw, who will be working closely with Brenda’s son.
“Mr Shaw will bring the real story of Brenda to the silver screen, working very closely with Mr Bongani Fassie.”
“The main role will be open for auditions across South Africa. This initiative will give the opportunity for any female across the country to apply for this challenging and honourable role for the movie,” added the company.
According to Showbizbee, the movie will be a comedy-drama and production is set to begin in February.
The pop diva, affectionately known as MaBrrr, rose to stardom in the early 90’s with hits like Weekend Special and Too Late For Mama among others before her death in 2004.
