Cape Town – According to the global fraud activity Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Western Cape are the common places for card fraud in South Africa.
South Africa is in the list of top 10 “in the latest ACO Global Consumer Fraud Study”.
According to the reports 33% of South Africans are the victims of this crime, and the cases increased by 3% between 2014 and 2016.
The report shows that 85.9% of these crimes take place in Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Western Cape provinces.
This should serve as a reminder for people to be extra careful when they are using ATMs, especially now that we are approaching the festive season.
“The best safety tip is to remain vigilant at all times. So often we are lost in thought, engaging on our mobile phones or listening to music, and the more distracted we are, the simpler it is for opportunistic thieves to steal from us.”
Consumers should always use the safety tips they get from the banks and the ATMs. Like always making sure that if they are using an ATM at night that place is safe, never ask for help from anyone and that when their cards are swallowed by the ATM they should use their stop card immediately.
