Coronavirus ‘currently eliminated’ in New Zealand

New Zealand – Jacinda Arden, Prime Minister of New Zealand has announced that coronavirus has been “currently” eliminated in the country.

The country had five new cases of Covid-19 reported on Monday with no widespread community transition. Arden said New Zealand has been able to avoid the worst scenarios for an outbreak and would continue to hunt down the last few cases.

“We are opening up the economy, but we’re not opening up people’s social lives,” Arden said at a press briefing. This as from midnight on Monday, it was announced that certain businesses which include construction will be allowed to open but maintained that social distancing will still apply.

The low numbers of new cases in recent days “does give us confidence that we have achieved our goal of elimination,” said Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield.
