DA, EFF save Mashaba and Da Gama

JOHANNESBURG – City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba and City of Johannesburg Speaker Vasco da Gama both survived a motion of no confidence on Thursday in parliament.

Efforts by the ruling party to remove Mashaba and Da Gama from their positions were fruitless as both the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) unanimously voted to keep the two parliamentarians in their positions.

Mashaba and Da Gama won the motion by 140 against 120 votes, which were more than enough to retain their positions.

EFF leader Julius Malema expressed his gratitude on the outcome of the motion and said everyone who performs well in parliament regardless of his or her party, will get full support from the EFF; adding that they will do everything in their power to keep corrupt people out of power.

After the motion, Malema also tweeted to the former mayor and ANC councillor Parks Tau that he would never be Joburg mayor again.

The DA has also showed great gratitude for the support they have received from the EFF, adding that the DA is prepared to building Johannesburg into a great city again, with opportunities for all.

Earlier on Thursday, the EFF also helped the DA’s Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Athol Trollip keep his position.
