CANBERRA- Scandal hit deputy minister of Australia Barnaby Joyce has resigned following sexual harassment accusations.
The allegation is that Joyce sexually harassed a woman, when the allegation first surfaced he vehemently denied the allegation, “spurious and defamatory”, but Joyce decided to resign as deputy minister and as party leader for The Nationals as
Joyce has said he will resign on Monday to make way for an 8am ballot that will determine he Nationals leader and deputy prime minister, for which the minister for veterans affairs and defence personnel, Michael McCormack, has put his hand up for the position and is the front runner.
However Barnaby Joyce said he will resign from cabinet not from parliament so that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s single-seat majority in the House of Representatives is maintained and undisturbed.
Earlier in the month Joyce did confirm he did have an affair with a staff member, which led Turnbull to ban any romantic relationship between ministers and staff to be ban.
Joyce said his resignation should be a “circuit breaker” for the parliament, “for Vikki, for my unborn child, my daughters, and for [my wife] Nat”.
“This has got to stop. It’s not fair on them. It’s just completely and utterly unwarranted, the sort of observation that’s happened.”
