Doctors call for lockdown to be lifted

Durban – Almost 30 doctors who have called for the relaxation of the current hard lockdown argue that they see far greater harm to the healthcare system and economy by further delaying the inevitable spread of the virus.

In a letter addressed to President Cyril Ramaphosa, the doctors praised his leadership for managing the outbreak thus far, and added they were now appealing for him to lift the “hard lockdown”.

“As those who are most at risk once the pandemic takes off in South Africa, we do not request this lightly,” read the letter addressed to Ramaphosa.

“We see far greater harm to our healthcare system and our economy by further delaying the inevitable spread of the virus. The ongoing ‘hard lockdown’ will likely cause far greater suffering in the short and long term than the pandemic itself.”

The healthcare system and economy were already not performing well at the outbreak of the virus, read the letter, and many who have not contracted the virus were not getting the treatment they required as hospitals were emptied for Covid-19 patients.
