Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un to hold historic meeting

WASHINGTON- US President Donald Trump agreed on Thursday to hold a historic first meeting with Kim Jong Un in a stunning development in America’s high-stakes nuclear standoff with North Korea.

South Korean National Security Advisor Chung Eui-yong standing in front of the White House earlier announced the first ever meeting between a US president and North Korean leader, which he said would take place by the end of May.

Chung who returned from Pyongyang where he meet Kim personally, a South Korean official expressed that the isolated leader of North Korea would like to meet Trump, he said, “expressed his eagerness to meet president Trump as soon as possible.”

Trump has confirmed that he has agreed to meet Kim, praising this new development as “great progress”, as efforts from US allies to halt North Korea Nuclear programme continue.

Trump tweeted, “Meeting being planned!” Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze. Also, no missile testing by North Korea during this period of time.”

“Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached.”

The two leaders have had public spats before, with Trump mocking Kim as “Rocket Man” on his Twitter account, whilst Kim has retaliated calling Trump “mentally deranged” and “dotard”.

The US has maintained they put as much pressure as possible on North Korea, the statement said,

“We look forward to the denuclearisation of North Korea. In the meantime, all sanctions and maximum pressure must remain.”
