
CAIRO- A Cairo military court on Tuesday sentenced 36 people to death over their involvement in attacks against Coptic churches in Egypt, defence lawyers said.
The lawyers said, 48 people were put on trial in connection with attacks on Coptic churches in the cities of Cairo, Tanta and Alexandria between 2016 and 2017.
The Islamic State jihadist group claimed responsibility for the attacks, that killed at least 80 people.
A Christian minority the Copts only make about 10% of Egypt’s 96 million people, they have been especially been targeted by terror group ISIS.
The opinion of Egypt’s highest religious authority is obtained whenever a death sentence is passed, but their opinion is not legally binding.
