DURBAN – Residents in Ematimalo, Greytown, were left perplexed following the murder of eight people belonging to the same family.
Eight Sibiya family members, including six children were murdered in cold blood by unknown suspects before their homes were set alight on Tuesday night.
Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident saying the murderers attacked two different households belonging to the Sibiya family.
“You can tell that this was personal against the Sibiya family, after attacking and setting alight the first Sibiya household they went on to attack another Sibiya household a mere 100 meters away,” he said.
Seven people died on the spot whilst one of the children who suffered third-degree burns died in hospital.
Reports say a 2-year old who survived is in critical but stable condition in hospital.
According to community members, they heard gunshots around 9pm and before they knew it, two households belonging to the Sibiya family were engulfed in flames.
Fanozi Shaik, a close family member believes the attacks were planned and his sisters were the targets.
“There is no question about it, these attacks were planned and my sisters were the targets. We are puzzled as the family because we never received any complaints about them…,” he said.
Amongst the victims who died include Ziyanda, Thembeka, Londeka, Olwethu, Sdudla and Lindo, who were all under the age of 10.
