According to the council, the state of emergency declared in late March is now expected to last for three months.
Regional deputy president Debretsion Gebremichael said that despite being uninfected to date, the region had in the past weeks undertaken intense door-to-door screening to detect any early symptoms of the virus.
Civil servants will be returning to work whilst inter-state movement will resume, he said when he explained what will happen under the relaxed regime. He further added that bars and restaurants will be allowed to open but to serve customers on a take-away basis.
