
Pretoria- A 34 year old man drowned on Tuesday at a sea near Gordons Bay in the Western Cape while trying to save his 10 year old son.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said bystanders reported that below the surf in the crystal pool around 3pm between Gordons Bay and Koegel Bay there was a son and his father were having difficulties.
According to a statement released by the NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon, the Athlone man and his son were fishing when the son was swept into the surf by waves. The father jumped into the surf to help his son but he ran into trouble.
The 10 year old boy was rescued by NSRI, they later went on a 7 minutes search, they spotted the father and pulled out of the water.
Medics immediately attended to him and performed CPR, while the sea rescue team rushed to the base of the NSRI in Gordons Bay.
Despite the medics’ effort the father was declared dead.
“The child has been transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition for treatment for shock and for observation for secondary drowning symptoms,” said Lambinon
