Havana, Cuba – Fidel Castro’s eldest son, 68 year old Fidel Angel Castro Diaz-Balart was found dead Thursday morning, as state media reported he took his “own life”.
Known as “little Fidel”, “Fidelito” because of his resemblance to his father he was trained by the Soviet Union,and become a nuclear physicist. Castro Diaz Balart was suffering from depression for several months, a Cuban official from Granma reported that, ” Fidel Castro Díaz-Balart, who had been treated by a group of doctors for several months due to deep depression, took his life this morning,” State media informed the Cuban public that he was being treated as an outpatient in recent months for deep depression and been receiving medical treatment after his hospital stay.
Before his death Castro was an employee for the Cuban Council State as as scientific adviser. He made public appearances with his father as a young boy but appeared more in the public eye after he was named scientific adviser to his uncle, Raul Castro who was named president in 2008.
Castro Diaz Balart was born to his father’s first wife Mirat- Castro Diaz. State media has announced that a funeral will be planned by his family, but further details were not given. His father Fidel Castro, the revolutionary leader, a long term serving leader in Cuba died aged 90 in 2016.
