DURBAN – A 52 year old female teacher from Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal says a principal from the school she taught fired her when she lost her sight.
According to this former teacher she was fired without following the right procedure, she wasn’t even given any papers to sign.
She went to say she reported to the Kwa-Zulu Natal Department of Education did not even try to help her.
This teacher got blind in 2006 when she was diagnosed with diabetes. This former teacher is now staying with her mother in a low cost house.
She has 3 children and she sleeps on the couch as she can’t even afford medication because the social grant she receives is not enough to cover all her basic needs.
She also went to say that she was fired after she went for a check up with the department’s doctor.
She was fired after 9 months she went to the check-up. She said she submitted leave forms to the department but they still fired her even though she followed the right procedure when she applied for her leave.
She is sad from the fact that she has become a burden to her family, the social grants she received after she was fired do not meet her basic needs she sometimes goes to bed without food.
