Former top cop Lamoer, Dawjee get effective 6 years in jail for corruption

CAPE TOWN- The Western High Court on Thursday sentenced former top cop, police commissioner Arno Lamoer was sentenced to 6 years for corruption.

The court handed down eight years but two suspended years for five years.

The court also handed down sentences to SAPS brigadiers Darius Van Der Ross and Colin Govender, as well as businessman Saleem Dawjee were handed jail terms.

Judge hearing the case Rosheine Allie said police corruption can not be tolerated and said the jailed sentences are appropriate.

Dawjee businesses were fined R60 000, R40 000 was suspended.

The men initially faced over 100 charges of corruption, racketing and money laundering.

The former police officers admitted they received bribes or gratifications from Dawjee. They all pleaded guilty to corruption charges in exchange for the state aiding them in  for a non-custodial sentence.
