Johannesburg – Gauteng’s surge in the number f Covid-19 cases hasn’t come as a shock, says Health MEC Bandile Masuku.
The number of active cases in the province has doubled in the space of a week, at over 20,000.
Officials say there is no cause for panic just yet.
Gauteng currently accounts for 38% of South Africa’s active cases, surpassing the Western Cape. This is different from the number of cumulative cases, which still has the Western Cape as number one.
The province says it is bracing to receive more than 1.3 million pupils as the second phase of schools reopening will happen on July 6.
Gauteng MEC for education Panyaza Lesufi says 176 schools were affected by Covid-19, with 58 pupils and 188 teachers testing positive.
Lesufi is, however, upbeat that schools will be ready to resume with classes.
