Johannesburg – Communities and families need to work together with the police to protect and support women.
Police Minister, Bheki Cele, said if this doesn’t happen the fight against gender-based violence will be difficult to win.
Meanwhile, police in Mpumalanga are concerned about the growing number of mutilated bodies in the province.
Community members are still reeling from the brutal murder of six-year-old Bontle Mashiyane. Her mutilated body was discovered on Saturday after being missing for weeks.
Mpumalanga Police spokesperson, Selvy Mohlala, said the case will be given the necessary attention.
At the same time, Cele said South Africa is on course to reduce its DNA test backlog. The backlog causes delays in prosecution as DNA is critical evidence in the criminal justice system.
The holdup in test results can lead to cases being struck off the roll due to no evidence produced in court.
The minister was speaking before the Portfolio Committee on Police, about the implementation of the Domestic Violence Act.
