Girl, 2, shot in mouth- latest child victim in Cape Town shootings

CAPE TOWN – Police in Cape Town say a two year old girl has been shot in the mouth and a man has been killed in a shooting in Elsies River, a suburb east of Cape Town.

The suburb has been the centre of recent of gang wars. The shooting happened on 12th Avenue in Leonsdale, Elsies River on Thursday, sources say.

Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, Police spokesperson, said when officers arrived at the scene they found the wounded toddler and the man, 31, who had been killed. She said there had been no arrests made.

Based on sources with knowledge of the incident, the shooter was in a white Toyota Quantum minibus which sped off after the attack.

It’s also understood that the member of the Bad Boys gang was the target of the shooting, however, it could not be confirmed.

This is not the first time that a child had been wounded in shootings in Leonsdale this year. Two boys aged 12 and 14 were wounded in February.

During that same time an 11 year old girl was also reportedly wounded when an alleged gang member used to her as a human shield.

In the past, children have been caught in gang related violence in other areas around Cape Town where gang violence is very prevalent.
