Gordhan: ‘Zuma lied about firing Nene’

JOHANNESBURG – Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan said former president Jacob Zuma lied about his reasons for firing former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene.

At the time of Zuma’s decision to remove Nene, he explained Nene would be getting a post as the head of the new Brics Development Bank.

But Gordhan called out Zuma on that, he said to the Zondo commission, the explanation was far from the truth.

“The reason given for Mr Nene’s dismissal which he would have covered in his testimony that he was going to be sent to Brics Bank,” Gordhan said.

“There was not such job. I was one of the initiators of Brics bank and such institution.

“There was absolutely not a job which was going to be commensurate with what someone like Mr Nene was going to offer within the Brics Bank or what is now called Development Bank today.”

Gordhan also told the state capture inquiry how he was bullied in a bid for him to quit, his critics said his appointment  ‘was a mistake’ for those enabling state capture.

He said, “Something had to be done to get rid of me.” He said he was it removed at that time because of the removal of Nene, and then three day finance  minister Des van Rooyen‚ he couldn’t be fired.

“Other means needed to be found to force me to resign‚” Gordhan said.
