Heavy Rains In Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG – A heavy thunderstorm hit Johannesburg and surrounding areas later on Monday afternoon, along with strong damaging winds and a massive hail storm causing flooding and havoc throughout the city.

The safety of the residents of Johannesburg raised concerns due to heavy storms that left some homes flooded and buildings and roofing destroyed from the heavy winds.

The ER24 Spokesman Russell Meiring said two people were injured when the heavy rain caused a ceiling to collapse at Cradlestone Mall in Krugersdorp area of the West Rand.

The areas mostly affected by this storm were the West Rand, Krugersdorp and the surrounding areas.

Although some people were injured from the storm havoc, there haven’t been any reports on any deaths caused by the storm. “Security members from the mall evacuated the area while paramedics treated the two patients,” said Meiring.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said the Gillooly;s interchange near Bedfordview and the N3 in Linksfield were flooded and heavily affected on the East Rand.

The R21 freeway in Olifantsfontein was also flooded and heavily affected as well as the R24 Edenvale were also damaged.

Motorists are advised to drive with extra precaution and have their headlights on at all times to avoid collision. The South African Weather Service said the storm has weakened and had moved over Mpumalanga.
