Johannesburg – The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed Hugo Broos as the new Bafana Bafana head coach.
The appointment comes following weeks of speculation as to who would succeed Molefi Ntseki.
Ntseki was shown the exit door at the end of March following Bafana Bafana’s failure to qualify for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Cameroon.
Broos’ name had been bandied about for a number of weeks now alongside that of Carlos Queiros, Pitso Mosimane and most recently Bennie McCarthy.
However, SAFA failed in their attempt to get the trio and opted for Broos.
The Belgian mentor has worked for a number of clubs.
He also coached in Algeri but his most high-profile coaching job in Africa was when he led Cameroon between 2016 and 2017.
He comes in at a time when South Africa is desperate to qualify for major tournaments.
Broos’ first and most difficult task would be to ensure that Bafana Bafana qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Bafana Bafana are set to get their FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June provided there are no postponements by CAF in the coming weeks.
