ICASA stands firm on ending emergency spectrum

Johannesburg – Communications authority ICASA is standing firm on ending the temporary spectrum.

Icasa says it will fight a new case by fixed-line operator Telkom around the temporary spectrum set to be taken away in November.

It allocated the radio spectrum to mobile operators last year.

This was an effort to ease communication challenges during the Covid-19 State of Disaster.

The regulator faced a backlash following its announcement two weeks ago that it would terminate the licences at the end of November.

Telkom took the issue to court. But Icasa said the temporary spectrum has to end as it is becoming anti-competitive, unfair and unjust.
