It’s business ‘unusual’ next to Mama Winnie’s Soweto home

JOHANNESBURG- Masedi Street‚ which leads to the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s home in Orlando West‚ Soweto‚ currently resembles a shopping mall.

Entrepreneurs around the around have taken advantage of the hundreds of people visiting Winnie Mandela’s home to play their respects to the late struggle icon.

Calling themselves ‘hustlers’ who have lined up both sides of the street are providing all sorts of goods to visitors.

What they offering ranges from books‚ ANC regalia‚ flags‚ banners and township food, popular foods such as kotas and full meals with salads.

Sis Phindi told TimesLIVE on Wednesday,  “I started on Tuesday with kotas. These are original kotas of mince meat‚ mashed potatoes and achar. Not the one with cheese‚ chips and polony. But we only started with kotas at 3pm. Before then we offered a plate of pap‚ sausage‚ gravy and two salads for R40. Today we are offering the same meal but without salads for R30 and it is picking up‚”

“We should be hustlers‚” she added.

She said her customers were people visiting Mam Winnie’s home, they include politicians‚ journalists‚ police‚ traffic police‚ students‚ neighbours and tourists. She hoped to make more money leading up to her funeral at Orlando Stadium on the 14th of April.

Members of the ANC NEC are expected to visit the home on Thursday.
