KZN Floods: Schools closed, educators ‘trapped since yesterday’

Durban – More than 500 schools are closely today due to the floods in KwaZulu-Natal.

Another 97 schools have reportedly damaged.

KZN Education MEC, Kwazi Mshengu says the situation is dire.

“Well the situation is bad. The report we have is that over 500 schools are not operating today and we think its the safe thing to do because of the flooding taking place in the province. We have also received a report that 97 schools have been confirmed to have been damaged by the floods,” Mshengu said.

“The most depressing one is that there is a school where educators have been trapped in their school since yesterday. We have been working around the night to try and rescue them. The police have not been able to assist us because the equipment that they have could not assist us… an hour ago it was confirmed that two military aircrafts left Limpopo to KZN… as we speak one aircraft has landed to start the evacuation processes,” he said.

Property, vehicles and other infrastructure have been severely damaged by floods in Durban and other parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Residents are being urged to take extra precautions.
