MADRID – Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has been fired two days before their opening World Cup match against Portugal and one day before the World Cup kicks off.
Lopetegui was announced late on Tuesday that he will be the new Real Madrid coach, but he had recently extended his contract with Spain, with the Madrid appointment his coach duties will start from next season.
The Spanish Football Association said that Lopetegui would leave his job with Spain after the World Cup.
However, many media reports on Wednesday said that RFEF president Luis Rubiales was so angry at Lopetegui’s conduct during the process he was prepared to fire him immediately.
Spain have come into the tournament unbeaten in 20 matches since Lopetegui took over after Euro 2016.
Lopetegui’s Spanish contract was suppose to last until 2020, at the end of the European Championships.
Rumors are circulating that former player Fernando Hierro is favorite to take over from Lopetegui in the interim.
