JOHANNESBURG – Mother and stepfather of Poppie van der Merwe have been sentenced to life in the North Gauteng High Court on Thursday for murdering the little girl.

Poppies mother Louisa and step father Kobus Koekemoer were convicted last year of killing the three-year-old.

The Judge also handed a further 10 years in jail for child abuse. The judge also said the parents showed little remorse for their actions and that mother Louisa failed to protect her children and that the court did not believe that she was scared that Koekemoer would hurt their children further if she reported the abuse.

A post-mortem report in court revealed that Poppie succumbed to several blows to the head.

The alleged abuse of Poppie was her being beaten, thrown around and kicked on various occasions between September 2015 and October 2016.

The couple was also found guilty of abusing Van der Merwe’s brother and stepsister.
