Lesotho MPs ‘demand 100% pay rise’ – report

Lesotho’s Members of Parliament (MPs) are reportedly demanding a 100% pay increase despite being already among the best-paid people in the landlocked African country.

Lesotho Times newspaper, a private owned media house, has reported that Prime Minister Thomas Thabane instructed Finance Minister Moeketsi Majoro to explore the idea of a “revised salary structure” for the parliamentarians.

The report said, if the lawmakers’ demands are met, the monthly salary could could up to $5 344, but ordinary Basotho workers earn a mire $144 a month.

An AFP report, has estimated that at least 75% of country’s population live in rural areas, they depend on agriculture and livestock. Most of their employed work in South Africa, particularly in the mining sector..
