NEW YORK- Liesl Tommy South African Tony nominated director will take on her first major movie about a homegrown hero.

This will be her first based directed film and it will be based on Trevor Noah’s autobiography Born a Crime which will also star Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o.

The film is based on Trevor Noah life as a mixed raced child under the apartheid government and his childhood memories during the time and how he become successful.

Tommy has a worked with Lupita Nyong’o before, who will be playing Trevor’s mother in the movie, Tommy directed her in her Broadway play Eclipse, for which she earned her best director nomination at the 2016 Tony Awards.

She’s also directed an episode of the drama series Queen Sugar, created by Ava DuVernay.

After the news broke she posted on her Facebook that she said her family members received copies of Noah’s book as Christmas presents and she was unaware that she’d one day direct the film.
