JOHANNESBURG-  Gauteng Premier David Makhura’s office has confirmed that they have settled the multi-million-rand financial claim linked to the Life Esidimeni tragedy.

Retired Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke in March ordered the government to compensate the 134 claimants of the collective amount of just over R159 million.

During the arbitration hearings it found that the rights of psychiatric patients and their families were violated by the Gauteng Health Department when it moved hundreds of patients from Life Esidimeni to illegal and badly equipped NGOs.

It is estimated that 143 mentally ill patients died as a result of that decision.

The premier’s spokesperson Thabo Masebe said, “The Gauteng provincial government has settled the financial award ordered by Justice Moseneke.”
