A 46 year old has handed himself over to police, after he allegedly opened fire on a group of protesters in Lichtenburg in the North West killing a 15 year old boy.
Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabane told journalists this morning that the man handed himself over to the police at around 22:00 on Tuesday evening.
It is reported that the boy was killed along the Boikhutso Road on Tuesday morning.
The Brigadier says at the time that a man who was travelling in a white car got out of his car and opened fire on a group of protesters. Two others were wounded.
The protest happened after a group of residents from the Blydeville community in Lichtenburg torched a truck on the R503 Lichtenburg-Coligny Road. The reasons for the protest were not immediately clear.
The roads were temporarily closed in the area.
Earlier in April a teenager Matlhomola Moshoeu was killed and that divided the nearby farming town of Coligny. It sparked riots, with residents taking to the street, looting and burning buildings.
The two men, Phillip Schutte and Pieter Doorewaard were arrested and face charges of murder.
They allegedly caught the boy stealing sunflower and claim they were driving him to the police station when he jumped off their bakkie. An eyewitness alleges he was pushed off.
