JOHANNESBURG- The petrol price will increase at midnight Tuesday night as South Africans brace themselves for a VAT increase that come into effect on the 1st of April, consumers will be experiencing tough times the next couple of months, as the VAT increase also includes the sugar tax bill which also come in-effect on the 1st of April.
Energy Minister Jeff Radebe last week announced that motorists will have to fork out 72 cents more for 95 octane while 93 octane is going up by 69 cents from midnight.
The price of all grade diesel will increase by 65.2% per litre.
It was clear that a petrol hike would happen after the announcement of an increase in fuel and the Road Accident Fund levy of 52 cents a litre combined.
In March the petrol price drop by 32 cents a litre.
The South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union’s Zanele Zanele Sabela said this petrol hike maybe a threat to job security in the industry.
“Once the companies can’t go up, we might just be faced with retrenchments.”
