LONDON- After six attempts to score against London side Chelsea, Lionel Messi finally scored against the club on Tuesday night as Barcelona clashed against Chelsea in the first round of 16 leg in the Champions League in Stamford Bridge.
The two teams had an absorbing 1-1 draw, as Chelsea attacker Willian opened the scoring for the home side in the 62nd minute, before he could not believe his luck, as his first two strikes in the first half hit the bar.
Barcelona’s had a tough night as his shots were off target but a partnership with midfielder Iniesta opened up play, as Messi strike in the 75th minute equalized for the Catalans.
Antoino Conte manager of Chelsea felt his team had a perfect game plan and were unlucky to win.
“It is a pity. I am very proud for my players. They followed what we prepared,“ Conte said. ”Tonight we were a bit unlucky.”
“I think when you play this game you must have a plan and respect the characteristics of the opponent. Our plan was really good. We are talking about 1-1 and maybe we deserved more.”
Barca coach Ernesto Valverde said “It was a clash of styles, two different teams, we had the game under control when they scored their goal. Perhaps we didn’t create many clear-cut chances, but we managed to force an error and get the draw.”
