Minimum wage: Nxesi says companies not complying

Johannesburg – Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi says companies are still not paying their workers minimum wage, despite mandatory changes and increases over the past year.

Nxesi was responding to a written parliamentary Q&A.

He revealed that approximately 36% of all workers are paid below the minimum national minimum wage.

The Minister clarified that the legislated minimum wage is not R3,500 per month as is widely reported.

Instead, it is R23,19 per hour payable for the number of ordinary hours worked.
