Ndabeni-Abrahams given R1,000 fine for lockdown lunch violation

Johannesburg – The Minister of Communication Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams raised few eyebrows earlier this month when he was photographed enjoying lunch with former deputy minister Mduduzi Manana.

The minister has been fined R1,000 for breaching lockdown regulations. The Pretoria District Court ordered her to appear in court on 22 May to pay the fine as an admission of guilt, though numerous reports state that she has already paid the fine after admitting guilt.

The president announced that he had placed Ndabeni-Abrahams on special leave for two months – one of which would be unpaid.

NPA spokesperson  Phindi Mjonondwane said the minister now has a criminal record as the amount of R1,000 was set for the offense of failing to confine oneself to one’s place of residence without a valid reason for leaving one’s house.

The minister was reprimanded by the president and directed to deliver a public apology. Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu is currently acting Minister of Communication while Ndabeni-Abrahams is on special leave.
