Nene- Cities will make or break the economy

JOHANNESBURG- According to the finance minister Nhlanhla Nene cities are key for a thriving South Africa.

Nene speaking at Gibs business school forum on Monday said, “There are many pressures‚ both fiscal and economic‚ and your cities are at the heart of that.”

He added that 70% of SA is urbanised and these ubranised areas contribute 80% of the GDP.

He said, “A stronger accountable leadership is important‚ now more than ever‚”

Nene stressed that challenges of poverty‚ inequality and unemployment must be addressed as stated in the National Development Plan (NDP).

He said, “Achieving success in these areas requires that our cities are well governed.”

Treasury director general Dondo Mogajane also attending the same event said if cities collapsed‚ countries collapsed.

He said, “Cities are an important growth engine of the economy. They are an important pillar in the growth story of SA‚”

“Our economy is not growing. What can we do to make sure our economy grows? We have low-lying fruit everywhere.”
