BRUSSELS – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised Donald Trump’s bold move in recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
The American president has received critics from Arab foreign ministers who have called for the president to rescind his controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, adding that his decision is “denounced and condemned” at all costs.
On Saturday, Arab ministers met at the Arab League headquarters in the Egyptian capital Cairo to denounce Trumps decision and also to encourage the international community to recognise a Palestinian state.
On the other hand, Netanyahu on Monday briefed the media at the European Council in Brussels, Belgium, that he is happy with the decision made by the American president.
Netanyahu told reporters that the bold move by Trump is key in building and maintaining peace in Israel.
“It makes peace possible because recognising reality is the substance of peace, the foundation of peace,” he said.
“There is now an effort to bring forward a new peace proposal by the American administration. I think we should give peace a chance. I think we should see what is presented and see if we can advance this peace,” he added.
Netanyahu also told all Palestinians and European governments that are making noise to emulate Trumps decision, “It’s time that the Palestinians recognise the Jewish state and also recognise the fact that it has a capital. It’s called Jerusalem.”
The much delighted minister also told reporters that he hopes all European countries will move their embassies to Jerusalem, and engage robustly with Israelites for security, prosperity and peace.
