The outgoing governor of Nigeria’s south-eastern Anambra state was arrested hours after he handed over to his successor.
Willie Obiano was detained on Thursday by officer from Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
He was reportedly arrested when at an airport in Lagos city while attempting to flee the country.
The EFCC’s spokesperson said that Obiano was being held for questioning, but he did not elaborate further.
Other former Nigerian governors have been arrested after leaving office to face prosecution for corruption – mostly involving money-laundering.
