Nigeria jails another governor for corruption

Lagos- A Nigerian former state governor and serving senator was on Tuesday found guilty of corruption, the second high-ranking official to be sentenced to jail the past two weeks.

The Abuja High Court has found Former governor of Plateau State Joshua Dariye guilty of misappropriating millions of dollars that was intended for an ecological fund, this marks the end of a case that had been running for over ten years.

Justice Adebukola Banjoko judgement, she said, “I can’t imagine such a brazen act of systematic looting and stealing.”

She sentenced Dariye to 14 years in prison for criminal misappropriation and two years for criminal breach of trust, both sentences will be running consecutively.

Dariye, represented opposition party People’s Democratic Party before he transitioned to serve as a senator for the ruling All Progressives Congress. It was in 2007 when he was accused of diverting over 1.1bn naira (more than $8.5m at the time) from the state treasury.

The sentence can be seen as efforts from Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari who is attempting to be a man in office tackling corruption ahead of presidential elections next year, where is surprised many by putting his hat in the presidential race for 2019.
