Numsa steel strike ends

Johannesburg – Numsa has accepted an above-inflation wage off of 6%.

In the first week of the industrial action, the steel sector lost R500 million in output. Workers, in turn, lost R100 million in wages.

The union had initially demanded a one year, 15% increase across the board.

In August, it revised it down to 8% after declaring a dispute at the Bargaining Council.

Almost 200,000 workers will now be expected to return to work.

Manufacturers who depend on the steel sector can now also resume clearing their backlogs.
